FS_SIZE in mos.yml not taking effect

I need just a smidge more FS space on my esp32 build (100k). I added FS_SIZE to my mos.yml:

author: dwegscheid
description: Generate test data streams (emulate STI receiver)
version: 1.0

libs_version: ${mos.version}
modules_version: ${mos.version}
mongoose_os_version: ${mos.version}

arch: esp32

  - ["wifi.ap.enable", false]

  - ["wifi.ap.pass", "password"]
  - ["wifi.sta.enable", true]
  - ["wifi.sta.ssid", "ATT5990"]
  - ["wifi.sta.pass", "..........."]
  - ["wifi.sta.dhcp_hostname", "stitest_????????????"]
  - ["sti.uart.uartno", "i", 2, {title: "UART to use"}]
  - ["sti.uart.pin", "i", -1, {title: "GPIO pin to write UART data to"}]

build_vars:
  FS_SIZE: 350000

# Used by the mos tool to catch mos binaries incompatible with this file format

but it doesn't take effect (mos build --local --clean yields).

  MKFS  /usr/local/bin/mkspiffs8 262144 {bs: 4096, ps: 256, es: 4096} /home/wegscd/Jenesis/sti-test-data-generator/build/objs/fs -> /home/wegscd/Jenesis/sti-test-data-generator/build/objs/fw_temp/fs.img
     FS params: size=262144, bs=4096, ps=256, es=4096

       Adding jquery-3.3.1.min.js: SPIFFS_write failed: -10001
*** Out of space, tried to write 86927 bytes ***

which tells me that it is still using FS_SIZE 262144.

Am I doing something wrong?
